What are ductless mini-split type systems?

Ductless Mini-Split air conditioners are systems that, unlike packaged window ACs, have a separate indoor unit (air handler) and outdoor unit (condenser). The indoor unit is typically mounted high up on the wall and acts as the blower while the outdoor unit is placed outside on the ground and contains the compressor. The two units are connected together by the refrigerant pipes and one control cable.

Mini-splits are rating by their BTU size (9000 BTU, 12000 BTU, 18000 BTU, 24000 BTU, 36000 BTU), which indicates the strength of the system. The higher the BTU, the larger the room the system can handle. Click here to figure out what BTU you need for each room. Our mini-split systems are all heating and cooling, remote controlled, energy efficient, and significantly quieter than any window type AC or the conventional central systems. - How are your mini-split systems compared to other name brand ones on the market? (Mitsubishi, Diakin, etc)

Our Covac brand mini-split systems are on par with any name brand systems on the market. The main reason we have only been installing our Covac systems since 2009 is because we are confident in the functionality, reliability, and performance in our product. We encourage all customers to read reviews from our past clients. They can be found at our Yelp and Google page. Click here for additional benefits when installing with Covac over other companies.

What are the benefits of Covac's mini-split over other types of systems?

One of the main benefits of mini-split air conditioners is its energy efficiency when compared to central air and window AC units. Mini-split type systems can cool/heat just the room you are in, rather than being force to cool/heat the entire house at once (central systems). Other attractive features include flexible installation, remote controlled, environment friendly R410a refrigerant, quiet operation, sleek design, very low maintenance, and virtually no upkeep.

Do you carry multi-zone systems and what are the pros and cons between having a single multi-zone system vs multiple single-zone systems?

A multi-zone mini split is a system with multiple indoor units (air handlers) while only having one larger outdoor unit (condenser). A single-zone system consists of only one indoor unit and one smaller outdoor unit. There are pros and cons with both types of systems. The main benefit for multi-zone is having one larger outdoor unit rather than multiple smaller outdoor units. However we only carry single-zone systems mainly because of the following:

1. Having outdoor unit close to each indoor unit yields the shortest and cleanest refrigerant line set run. Multi-zone may require much longer line set run wrapping around the house since it has to cater to one location of the outdoor unit

2. Short line set runs means more energy efficient, since the compressor does not have to pump as hard.

3. Unlike multi-zone, even if an outdoor unit fails, only one room will stop heating/cooling. If the outdoor unit of a multi-zone system fails, all the rooms will stop heating/cooling.

What size BTU mini-split system do I need?

The chart below shows the recommend size for a room that is well insulated, enclosed, with standard 8 feet high ceiling. To calculate the square feet (sqft) of your room, simply multiply the length with the width (in feet) of the room. (Note: always calculate BTU size to be over what's needed if your room has lots of windows, high ceiling, or lacks insulation.)

What kind of mini-split systems do you carry and what are the specifications?

We only install our Covac brand single-zone wall-mount ductless mini-split systems. All the systems are heating and cooling, remote control, and energy efficient. Below are the specifications (click here to download) of all our mini-split systems:

What are the maintenance for Covac's mini-split systems?

Our ductless mini-split require very little maintenance and minimal upkeep. We recommended the users to do the following:

1. Clean the indoor unit air filters every 6 months. Clogged filters may reduce air flow and degrade unit performance. To access the filters, simply swing open the front panel of the indoor unit and side the filters out. All our filters are reusable. Just use water and a brush to clean then slide them back into the unit!

2. Especially during Spring and Fall, leaves and other plant materials may build up around the outdoor unit. It is recommend to hose down the outdoor unit (back side) every year. The better the outdoor unit can vent, the better the system will perform.
